Vapes are Heavily Regulated in These Countries

As you can see, international vaping laws vary. While some countries haven't introduced outright bans, local regulations still apply. These include:

  • Australia: From October 2024, Australia allows therapeutic vape sales up to 20mg e-liquid strength for adults over 18. Pharmacies are the only legal marketplaces for vapes.

  • Japan: Nicotine-free e-liquid is allowed in Japan, and visitors can bring up to 120 ml into the country for personal use.

  • USA: Laws vary by state. New York, California, and Massachusetts have banned certain flavours. The federal minimum age for vaping in the US is 21.

  • Turkey: You can't buy vaping products in Turkey, but you can bring your own device in with up to 30ml of nicotine e-liquid.

The EU Tobacco Products Directive

All EU member states follow TPD laws, which include a maximum of 20mg nicotine per e-liquid and a 10 ml maximum bottle size for nicotine e-liquid. The Netherlands also bans all flavoured vapes apart from tobacco-themed e-liquids.

EU rules are similar in the UK, under the Tobacco and Related Products (TRPR) legislation. Indoor vaping is banned in public spaces throughout most EU countries and the UK.

Tips for UK Travellers When Travelling Abroad:

  1. Check Local Rules: Travelling abroad might mean that you can't take vapes or even nicotine products, so it's essential to check local regulations before you pack anything. Some countries have national laws, while certain regions may have specific rules.

  2. Think About Limits: Even if a country allows vape use for personal possession, check e-liquid limits and whether you can bring spare batteries. Our How many vapes can I take on a plane guide covers this information.

  3. Check the Rules On Nicotine Products: Some countries have also banned nicotine pouches and other related products. You could face fines or confiscations for packing them.

  4. Take Note of Smoke-Free Zones: Avoid vaping indoors in public spaces, and be wary of smoke-free zones, as these often apply to vaping too.

Most countries have clarified their laws, but some regulatory grey areas remain. By researching before you travel, you can prepare in advance and avoid legal consequences.
