Vape Not Working? Charging, No-Vapour and Gurgling Fixes

Vape Not Working? Charging, No-Vapour and Gurgling Fixes

There's nothing more annoying than getting ready to take a puff on your vape and it not working. Maybe the device isn't producing any vapour, or perhaps it's making gurgling sounds. In some cases, your vape might not even charge, which means you can't use it.

Luckily, once you know why your vape isn't working, it's easy to fix it - in most cases. In this post we'll cover charging, vapour production and gurgling issues, including what they mean, and how to deal with them.

When Your Vape Isn't Charging...

Vapes need battery power to heat the e-liquid inside the tank and produce vapour. So, if your vape flickers on and off while charging, can't reach full capacity, or won't charge at all, it's usually an issue with the charging cable, outlet, or the device itself.

General Charging and Cable Checks

If you use a charging cable regularly and transport it often, it's more likely to get damaged. If you have another compatible charger, test it to see whether your vape works. Always use manufacturer-recommended chargers, as they reduce the risks of damage.

Trying another power source can also be beneficial. For example, if you plug the vape into your laptop, try a wall socket.

Clean the Charging Port

Many vape devices come with a cover that protects the charging port from debris, but dirt, lint, and dust can accumulate over time. Cleaning debris from the port with a cotton swab can help it connect and charge the vape.

Battery Checks

If you've checked the above and can't identify any issues, the issue is probably with your vape's battery. Lithium-ion batteries are highly durable, but they're not invincible.

Over time, battery life becomes less consistent, and eventually you'll need to replace the battery cells or buy a new kit.

No Vapour Production

If your vape is active and working but can't produce vapour, it could be due to a range of issues, including the vape tank, connections, airflow chamber, or pod. Here's how to find the root problem:

  • Check Vape Juice Levels: The first step is to check your vape tank to see whether it's empty. This doesn't just affect vapour production; it can also cause burnt hits, which nobody wants.

  • Remove the Pod or Tank: Remove the pod/tank from the vape and clean the connection with a cotton bud or a kitchen towel to remove any debris. Disconnecting them also helps ensure the chamber is seated correctly.

  • Battery Issues: Most vape batteries will produce less vapour over time, and you may need to replace the device. However, if you have a mod kit, you can often replace the battery cells.

A Gurgling or Bubbling Vape

One of the most common issues is a gurgling sound, which often happens when too much liquid is in the central airflow tube or coil (also known as flooding). You might also notice e-liquid reaching your mouthpiece.

Airflow and coil flooding can occur if you fill the vape with excess e-liquid, take aggressive draws, and use the wrong vape juices:

  • Make sure the visible liquid doesn't exceed the maximum line.

  • Check whether you're using the right vape juice. For example, sub-ohm devices require thicker liquid such as shortfills, while refillable pod kits and vape pens are best suited to thinner liquids like 50/50 e-liquids or high-PG blends.

  • Take a few gentle puffs to see if the gurgling sounds stop.

  • Change your coils regularly and make sure the device doesn't sit unused for ages.

Other Potential Issues

So, we've covered gurgling and bubbling issues, as well as charging and no-vapour issues. However, it's also important to cover other problems that can affect your vaping experience.

Vape Spitting E-Liquid

Spitback is similar to vape bubbling sounds, and it's usually caused by a flooded coil, which occurs when excess liquid collects around it. When this vape juice is heated before it can properly vaporise, droplets can travel through the mouthpiece.

Also, hard draws can pull excess liquid through the mouthpiece. Blowing through the mouthpiece can push excess liquid out of the airflow chamber.

If you keep experiencing the same issues, check whether you're using the correct coils and e-liquid for your refillable vape.

Leaking Vapes

If you notice e-liquid leaking from your device, it could be due to damage. For example, a cracked tank or pod can let e-liquid seep through, while damaged seals can't contain the vape juice.

Also check e-liquid thickness, as using the wrong type can increase the risk of leaks. You should also replace coils regularly to ensure that they can absorb the liquid.

With prices set to rise thanks to the vape tax, knowing how to use your e-liquid efficiently can save a lot of money.

Vape Troubleshooting Quick Checklist

If your vape isn't working, run through these checks:

  1. Make sure your device is switched on and has battery life.

  2. Check charging cables, ports, and outlets.

  3. Clean and dry the vape tank regularly.

  4. When using a new coil, make sure it's compatible with your device and prime it with a few drops of e-liquid.

  5. Use the right e-liquid for your device type, and don't overfill the tank.

  6. Clear excess liquid from the mouthpiece.

When to Replace Your Vaping Device

Vape devices aren't invincible, and most will need replacing at some point. Heavy vapers might get 12 months out of a device, while lighter vapers typically find their kits last longer.
