As the chimes strike midnight and 2019 becomes 2020, a quarter of a million Brits will finish their last cigarette, stub it out into an ash tray, discard the rest of the packet and embark on a new smoke-free future. If you’re one of those people, good luck to you. We’re proud of you.
In this blog post, we’re going to explain just how much healthier you'll be when you quit smoking, before explaining how we can help you get over any of the cravings that might make you crabby, irritable and tired.
Two Weeks in to Quitting. What’s Going to Happen?
If you’re giving up cold turkey or switching over to vaping with an ecigarette or vape pen (more on that shortly), you should feel the benefits almost instantly.
After just 12 hours – so midday on January 1st, your blood oxygen levels will rise and your blood carbon monoxide will drop. You might not notice if you're hungover, but you should feel a bit perkier.
By the end of the first week, the number of cravings you experience should drop off to three or four per day. This is the peak time for people to pick up a packet of cigarettes, because these cravings can feel stronger and longer due to your body’s stress responses.
After two weeks, you'll have fewer cravings, and your circulation should be almost back to normal, although you might still be angry, anxious, impatient and restless. You could even be having issues sleeping. On the plus side, your heart attack risk will have dropped significantly.
So that’s where you'll be. A healthier, if slightly angrier, non-smoker. You’ll be on the home stretch, and you might notice something.
Your friends who vape will probably be having it just a little bit easier than you are.
Vaping Helps You Quit
We’re not making that up. The University of East Anglia say it’s true – and that it’s true even if you don’t want to quit. In fact, an ecigarette is an even better aid to quitting smoking than any of the gums or patches.
But even though vaping makes quitting easier, people still worry that it’s trading one harmful habit (smoking) for something equally as bad.
Well don’t worry, because Public Health England have shown that vaping really isn’t as bad as smoking at all.
Vaping is Tar-free, making it Safer
In this video, Public Health England perform an experiment. There are three jars, filled with cotton wool. Each jar represents a human lung (which in real life isn’t full of cotton or made of glass, but please bear with us).
They then pump a month’s worth of air, eliquid vapour and tobacco smoke through each “lung.” And the results are stunning.
The fresh air jar is fine. Totally clear, no discolouration at all. Which suggests that the air isn’t from a roadside in Manchester
The vape jar is nearly as clean. A little condensation, but that’s about it.
Then we get to the smoking jar. It looks like a jar of marmite. Thick, black, sticky tar on every surface. Never mind putting you off smoking – it’ll put you off your dinner!
Tar is one of the worst things in tobacco smoke, and it’s something that isn’t produced by ecigarettes or vaping. So if you’re planning on quitting, well done. It’s difficult, it’s not fun, but it’s definitely worth it in the long run.
But if you don’t think you can do it without any help at all, please don’t pick up a packet of cigarettes. Instead, turn to the cleaner, safer option and choose an ecigarette.
That’s what the NHS recommend, and who are we to disagree?
